Considerations for Planning a Successful Portrait Session
We are so glad that you have made the decision to incorporate beautiful professional portraits into your home and life.
Some things to keep in mind for your portrait session:
CLOTHING: Please keep outfits simple and neat. In most cases casual attire in solid colors is recommended. Avoid bold patterns and prints, as they are very distracting. For group portraits, we recommend similarly toned colors; a monochromatic look assures that no one person stands out too much from the others in the group .Consider avoiding light colors that approximate flesh tones such as beige, tan, peach, pink, white, and yellow. Darker shades are generally more flattering and slimming.
HAIRSTYLES: Plan haircuts at least 7 days prior to your portrait session, in order to allow the hair to even out a little and get used to the style. Allow 10 days to two weeks for a fresh perm to relax. We do not advise trying a new style within two weeks prior your portrait session. If an outdoor session is planned, you may wish to apply hairspray to keep the hair in place in case of breeze. Gentlemen, please shave prior to your session, as it is very difficult to remove stubble and five o'clock shadow from the photographs.
MAKEUP: Ladies, apply your makeup slightly heavier than normal as if you were going out for the evening. We recommend sticking to neutral colors. Pay special attention to your eyes, as they are the most expressive part of the face and very important to your images. Concealer helps soften blemishes and lines and is recommended for everyone in the group when necessary. RedFeather Photography does offer makeup artist services with advanced notice. Subject to availability.
GLASSES: If you wear glasses most of the time, you may want to wear them in your portraits. However, tinted glasses, and glasses that darken in bright light do not generally photograph well. Please avoid wearing these where possible. You may want to consider wearing a pair of empty frames rather than your glasses in order to eliminate the possibility of glare. Please be sure to remove any sunglasses at least 20 minutes prior to your session in order to eliminate any creases they may cause in your face, as well as to allow you to adjust to the light to reduce squinting.
MAKING YOUR PORTRAIT YOUR OWN: Your portrait should reflect you and your lifestyle-you might want to include a special prop in some of the images. If you would like to include something to make the portrait your own, please remember to bring it with you! If you would like to discuss some ideas, please do not hesitate to let us know.
CONSIDER COORDINATING:If at least one of your portraits will be hung in your home, you may wish to make considerations for the decor in that area. It may be advantageous to coordinate the clothing colors to match or compliment the colors in the room where the portrait will be hung or use props that tie in well with the area.
